01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Walk along the quiet residential streets of Kameido and you will come upon Satō Bread, known for its distinctly deep-browned koppepan—Japan's traditional oblong bread rolls. Unlike standard rolls prized purely for airy softness, the dough here has a firm, resilient bite that releases an honest wheat flavour the more you chew. You can buy the rolls plain to appreciate the crumb itself, but the true charm of the shop lies in pointing through the glass showcase to choose your fillings and having each bun assembled right in front of you.
From sweet spreads to savoury fillings
One of the house staples is a generous swipe of smooth peanut cream. Its rich sweetness meshes naturally with the roasty crust of the roll, making it an easy favourite across generations. You will also find nostalgic combinations like strawberry jam and margarine with its familiar sweet-and-salty balance, as well as savoury options such as thinly sliced ham relying on simple curing salt, or sauce-dipped fried ham cutlets (hamu-katsu).
Loaves by the slice and morning takeaway
Beyond the long buns, the bakery offers standard white bread (shokupan) sliced into 4, 6, or 8 cuts, which can also be paired with peanut spread, jam, or ham for takeaway. Doors open early at 6:00, making the shop a practical stop for breakfast on the way to work or during a morning stroll. Note that the shop is strictly takeout and accepts cash only, so it is best to have coins or small notes ready.
